Holographic Disc

A computer disc holding 300GB using holographic memory technology will go on sale in 2006 according to vnunet.com.

Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) storage size makes Blu-ray and HD-DVD optical disc seem tiny in comparison. Early versions of holographic disk storage can store up to 300GB per disk. By 2010, the disks are expected to cost $100 each and store 1.6 terabytes (that’s roughly 1,600 gigabytes) each. (joystiq)

Storage capacities of other up and coming discs format:

  • Blu-ray disc has a single layer capacity of up to 27 GB and a dual-layer capacity of up to 54 GB
  • HD DVD has a single layer capacity of 15 GB and a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB

Why do we still need Discs? One cratch and it's all gone. Npw I wouldn't want data worth 1Tb to be lost in one go. Time to do away with the "Mechanism". It's time for some chips!

Holographic storage is very resistant to scratches and physical damage. In fact, if you cut the hologram in half, both retain the same information as the original (although my understanding of inPhase is that each disk was billions of tiny holograms, so you still can't recover from, say, breaking the disk in half.)

It still remains to be seen if it will be a commercial success. ZD says inPhase went bankrupt inPhase's web site says they got new investors and management... so who knows?

Blu-Ray is a better option when it comes to storage capacity. Played a couple of games which were released on Blu-Ray because of the huge difference in it's storage, the game was even more interesting.
