Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.

I'm not a DBA. I don't even play one on TV. I do consider myself pretty handy with SQL Server though. Much moreso than say, MS Access. Honestly, I hadn't touched Access in quite some time... perfectly content to bang away in Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer. After all, “real apps“ especially “web apps“ don't use Access... right? Right?

[*I personally have never said that of course, but I've heard it often enough. Ok, yeah, maybe I did, anyway...*]

So... of course, where do I find myself but knee-deep in Access at the moment. Working on a migration from Access 2000 to SQL Server 2000. If it were only a few tables, it wouldn't even be an issue... but naturally this is a big honkin database. Lots of tables, queries, macros, etc.  All the frontend stuff, such as it is, is in Access as well so I can't just DTS it up and change a connection string since the Access db actually IS the app.

So... I poke around. Hmm...  Upsizing Wizard. That sounds promising.

[*hey you... stop laughing or you'll ruin the surprise at the end*]

*several hours later*

Wow, ok that was slow and painful. Now lets look at the error report. (You didn't expect it to work the first time through, did you??) Hmm... report is kinda big. Almost 300 pages. Flip through the report... wow... THREE HUNDRED PAGES of error messages along the lines of “Table was skipped, export failed.”  and  “Failed to upsize query.”

[*Thanks a lot Access 2000 Upsizing Wizard. I can now officially say “you suuuuuuuuuuuck.”*]

But hey... half the fun of work is figuring out new ways to get around problems that should have been easy in the first place, right? Well then, at the moment, I'm so deep in fun I'm thinking about installing a slide and diving board.  We'll see how it goes.
