Microsoft Visual Studio sometimes crashes when the .sln solution file gets out of sync with the hidden .suo file. The .suo file stores information such as the active project and is automatically created by Visual Studio.

To fix this issue, try deleting the .suo file. Visual Studio will just create a new one for you and the solution should open up correctly.

If you can't see the .suo file, check your hidden file settings in explorer:

Tools->Folder Options...->View->Hidden files and folders->Show hidden files, folders, or drives

Deleting this file also helps with Visual Studio reactions times. On big solutions this files grows in time very big and after a certain point, VS 2012 feels slugy.
At the moment you delete the file, even with the VS 2012 with that solution, everything speeds up upon the next action

Thanks for this post.

.suo file also can be reach directly in File Explorer (explorer.exe in Win7).

If you have turn-on the show hidden file then you can see it in root directory of your project.

Sometime VS recreated the .suo file based on old setting (if you have opened it in VS). If this happen Build, Rebuild make thing work fine :)

I am using VS2005.
I have such a crash problem when i close the project with a dialog projecting open. The next time i open the solution VS crashes. It stops crashing if i delete the .suo.

That's too bad because, although VS opens faster, the .suo is really a big help. For example it stores the positions of all my breakpoints and bookmarks. If i delete the .suo i have to recreate the breakpoints position every time.
I just have to remember to close all the projecting windows before closing VS.

Is there any other workaround?
