Tax site goes down!
The UK government has an excellent on-line process for allowing its citizens to upload their tax returns except on one day of the year- 31st January. The rules around self-assessment mean that the citizen must have provided a tax return for the previous tax year by the 31st January. As the year ends on the previous April you would think that would provide enough time... There is a £100 fine for not hitting the date and this seems to be the issue. As with each year before the rush to get tax returns ......

Where did Microsoft get the name Silverlight from!!

The answer is a lot simpler than you think...the product has been named after David Silverlight, creator of many community websites like Community Credit.

Microsoft have a new policy of rewarding very active community leaders by naming products after them.

So WPF/E became Silverlight.

RFID - Where are the innovative solutions?

I've been involved/interested in RFID for over 3 years now and even with BizTalk 2006 R2 + RFID server I am still looking forthe really innovative solution, the jaw dropper, the one you want to tell everyone about.

At the moment I find most customers are still stuck in the 'tag and reader' world without cottoning on to the bigger picture.

If anyone out there knows differently please let me know....

Reality Check
It's fun working for an IT consultancy at the cutting edge of technology. I can spend my time with lots of 'new' toys. The problem comes when working with customers that for very good reason or running a long way behind the edge! I have just recently completed a spell in such an environment at in some ways it has been a reality check of how most of the 'world' operates. Simple stuff such as 'must work with the following ancient browsers' , no downloads to client (there goes Silverlight!) and such ......

But I've got to thinking I should kill them overnight. Now I have one router - a BT Home Hub that feeds my BT vision box and needs to be left on for overnight updates. The rest can 'be off'!!! What I need is a way to just switch them all ......

Software Development - The Pyramid Approach

What ever the latest software development methodology we investigate or decide is the new defacto approach when the big project kicks in and the chips are down because of the two mistresses of cost and time we always revert to the pyramid approach:

A basic architectural design used many times before, a million 'bricks' pilled on top of each other with no thought for structure and most importantly the use of as many 'slaves' as we can fit around it to succeed by brute force!

Vista or XP?
With the less than estatic response to Vista it struck me that what is needed is a common sense approach to this... Vista in many ways is 'where its at' as a developer there are a lot of features that are already there for you to use - .Net 3 for instance but it feels that unless you have a very good machine of vintage two seconds ago it runs like a dog!! This means to a great extent your productivity takes a bashing! The other issue with Vista with less than cutting edge kit is the problem of drivers ......
