IMPORTANT UPDATE There was a sudden last-minutes issue with the transportation / flights configuration that prevented me from making it to Cairo. I’ll be unfortunately missing out this event. M. Smay my friend will be a great backup with all the additional details he has to provide about his session content as well as an open session for the convenience of all of you. Sorry for missing out. I had to. I’m working with dotNETwork to re-organize my session as part of June 2009 gathering, but this is ...
Here are some screen shots from VS2010 Beta. The first thing I noticed is that Team Explorer is (finally) installed with the base install. The new look has an Expression-Blendy feel to it… Also, I noticed that it defaults to a single tool bar line at the top. Nice! Check the add-ins you installed before Visual Studio 2010 if you enabled VS 2010 integration in them. Particularly TestDriven.NET is the problem. Go to “Add Remove Programs” / “Programs and Features”, find Test Driven.NET, click “Change”, and then modify it to remove VS2010 integration from it. Also, if you are using AnkhSVN, make sure to download a new latest daily update build and use that, otherwise, you’ll get an exception when starting VS 2010. I’ll be writing more about VSTS 2010 and .NET 4.0 ...
*Moved to: Why is the VS2010 iso so small? The reason is simple, it has no MSDN documentation in it. I for one never install the MSDN documentation and just use the online version and have always found it a pain to have it inside the same installation, but may people find it useful. And, why is there no Offline MSDN documentation? The answer is simple, it is not ready yet…Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...

I am sitting in the auditorium waiting for the keynote to start. I am curious to see if there are any surprise announcements or if it is just a re-hash of all the recent public announcements. Rumor has it they may announce VS2010 beta 1. I am sure they will highlight Office 2010 and Exchange 2010 – but to what degree I am not sure. My hotel was a big disappointment – but I picked it and was tricked by the flashy website so I have no one to blame but myself. I feel like I am staying at a Moroccan ...

Slightly delayed but pleasantly as random as #2.Time to split the list into dev stuff and not dev stuff :-) Development Related Code Contracts for Visual Studio – yep, pre and post conditions make mainstream (nearly). I have just had a 2 hour battle with Live Mesh which has reminded me just how much I have come to rely on Live Mesh in my day to day life and how well it normally works (It gets the “It just works” tick) I am currently regularly using: A Vista machine with VS2008 SP1 – when I need stability and to just get things done. A Vista machine with a daily build of VS2010 – for some .NET 4.0 stuff I am doing such as parallel A Vista VPC running the CTP of VS2010 from the PDC – when I need a more stable (but ...
I don't have any post relating to how I get to know computers in general and why I choose a career in software development, in fact I needed to do that, since I need to continue a meme that a friend of mine forwarded to me. I'll try to do that sometime later, but suffice to say that it's quite lengthy. Because of my (yet to posted) background, I usually install stuff myself and fiddle quite a bit with computers by myself. I had installed quite a bit of Windows-based Microsoft OS, from Windows 95 ...
Yesterday was the St. Louis Day of .NET event (hencefore I'll refer to STLDODN); it was a great success!. I was fortunate enough to be involved in this grand event; Clint Edmonson asked if I would be available to present some Microsoft PDC material, and I took that opportunity - even got to choose which topic to present. I chose to do a presentation on Parallel Programming for Managed Code Developers. Thanks for the chance, Clint. To make sure I'm well prepared, I also volunteered to present it at ...

For those of you playing with the VS2010 CTP, you've probably noticed that it's going to stop working around New Years. Jeff Beehler just posted this blog entry on how to extend the life of your (new) VS2010 VPC beyond that time.

Kansas City hosted a Kansas City Day of .NET this past Saturday; I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity by Lee Brandt to present there. Wonderful time was had for all, food & drinks were provided along with some nice raffled items at the end. Kudos to the 3 facilitators of this event: Lee Brandt, Becky Isserman and Doug Butscher. In any case, I was there presenting Parallel Programming for Managed Code Developers; essentially re-delivering Daniel Moth's excellent PDC presentation. ...

The contracts take the form of pre-conditions, post-conditions, and object invariants. Contracts act as checked documentation of your external and internal APIs. PDC seems to be all about .NET 4.0 and beyond How to make use of all the cores in our machines How to make use of the cloud Windows 7 Touch screens The added features in .NET 4.0 I could use now - so it's sort of useful that they've given us a VPC with VS2010 on it. That's enough to play with, but personally I would have prefered to get a image so I could install it on a existing system. Recycling seems to be much more important this year - which is good. Bit of warning regarding the bag would have ...
This keynote is all about Windows 7 (the Vista that shoulda been) and new things from ScottGu's team. While yesterday was about the back-end infrastructure of the new cloud platform Azure from Microsoft, today's keynote focused on the front end of Microsoft. One funny question from Ray Ozzie was wondering what we would do at work all day if we didn't have a computer on our desk. Here are some random notes from the keynote. "The PC will be more relevant in the next era." - Ray Ozzie Today we barely ...
CNET has an interesting teaser article describing a "black box" feature for VS2010. As a developer/tester, I can tell you this would be excellent! Imagine having all the details of the application state on a crash or error. As the article describes, it should reduce the "works fine on my box" approach to defect resolution. As a developer, it will reduce my feeling of helplessness when a defect pops up that I can't reproduce. As a tester, I will be able to provide additional information about the ...
Ok, so I am doing some exploring to open the old rep...rep....rep...skillset a bit. Thought I'd look at some web stuff; not done a lot of ASP in a looooong time. So, there I am deciding to look at ASP.Net 2.0. At work, we have a Safari Books Online subscription. I normally prefer to have a hard cover, real, no kidding book. However, this does let me peruse them and find ones I like, and if I don't want to actually buy it, I don't have to do so. It does allow offline access to some, so it's a good ...
