One of the great new features in Visual Studio 2010 is the ability to now use code snippets inside of ASP.NET, HTML, and JavaScript files. Snippets have long been a productivity boost for regular C# code but have been sorely missing for mark up. In fact, frameworks like MVC 2 actually ship with their own snippets. There are only about 10-15 snippets that are currently shipping with MVC (and many of those are just duplicated because there are both VB and C# versions). That doesn’t seem like very many. ...

With the release of the VS2010 Release Candidate, a new edition of the training kit has also been released. Some of the features: 17 presentations, 22 demos, 32 hands-on labs. Newly added content includes VB.NET, Office, SharePoint and Application Lifecycle Management.

You can now get your hands on the Release Candidate version of Visual Studio 2010 and .Net 4.0 if you are an MSDN subscriber. MS also announced that it will make the RC available to all on Wed Feb 10. Upgrade for VS2010 and .Net 4 is an uninstall/reinstall operation. The RC release also includes an updated TFS 2010. If you are upgrading from TFS 2010 Beta 2 to the RC build Byran Krieger blogged some instructions for doing so. Technorati Tags: VS2010,RC,TFS 2010,Upgrade ...
First of all I have to say how excited I was to see the new reportviewer with VS2010 Beta 2, I have one application that has embedded reports in it up to this point we could not use the SSRS2008 reports with it, but now we can. So we included all the new reports that we have been using for our web app, but couldn't use it with this version of application, to the project, next went to the prerequisites and checked Microsoft Visual studio 2010 Report Viewer. After deploying the project we started getting ...
We begin this particular piece of our adventure into functional programming with some WCF code unification. This same technique can be used with other constructs including database connections and anything that has a setup/tear down template. I have a small set of example code using WCF which I’ll be using as an example. The specifics of the WCF calls, syntax, and general discussion is outside of the scope of this particular post; however, there are many good references on MSDN and in other’s blogs. ...
As you’ve probably noticed if you read my blog, the VS ALM Rangers have been busy the last week or so. C# 4.0 introduces the notion of Covariance and Contravariance of generic type parameters for interfaces and delegate types. Eric Lippert has put together a bunch of posts that goes into details of the why and how, an excellent read but not for the faint of heart. I would strongly suggest reading these posts to get a firm grounding and a better appreciation of this feature. It took me a while to get my head wrapped around this, especially since none of the VS2010 Betas were not out at the time and ...
Wow, it only seems like just last week I was sitting at my PC trying to determine what I was going to concentrate on in software development for 2009. I had also just started the Frederick .NET User Group (FredNUG) in September 2008 and I was trying to figure out how to get speakers scheduled. Then, things started to quickly fall into place. My local INETA mentor, Frank La Vigne, provided me with a few names of well respected .NET MVPs who would most likely be interested in speaking at FredNUG. (Thanks ...

I use Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro to run Windows 7. Last night I thought I would try installing Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. Sadly, the install kept failing with an "access denied" error. I was determined to figure it out. I ran Process Monitor to see what was going on and looked at some of the log files it was writing to. One of them said it found drive E: to have the most space, but failed when it attempted to write to it. Drive E: was my OS X partition. So, I fired up disk manager in Windows 7 (diskmgmt.msc) ...

Folks with MSDN Subscriber licenses going to grab the latest version of VS2010 may wonder ‘Where is Team System? Team Suite? Team Developer? Team Architect?’ They are gone! Does that mean that MS is getting out of the ALM toolset market? Or does it mean that the ‘Team’ stuff is being released later? The answer is NEITHER. The branding, naming and licensing of Visual Studio is changing for the 2010 version. The ‘Team System’ branding is being dropped. What ‘used’ to be the ‘Team’ client products are ...
So first impressions….. Hmmmmm…. This is BIG! First off, the conference is sold out. There has been an increase of attendance of close to 100% since the last conference. There are people here from over 70 different countries. The keynote was not what I had expected. Ballmer did a great job explaining the new vision for SharePoint and how they are starting to embrace more of what customers, developers, and IT pro's want. Some of the key areas that came up that were of importance were: Distributed ...

In the October edition of MSDN Magazine, there’s a great article that does a quick rundown of building a component that can be surfaced as a Web Part via the Gallery and placed in Web Part zones on pages. On Monday I presented at the St. Louis .NET User Group, and the topic was ‘What’s new in VS2010 and .NET 4.0 Framework’. Within the whirlwind look at all the new and cool stuff coming in the near future, the subject of Covariance and Contravariance support was discussed. Given the time constraint I only spent 3-4 minutes at it. I alluded to the group that the concept of Covariance/Contravariance is rather hard to understand, because it is not as intuitive as it could be; I just asked them to trust ...
Last night I had the pleasure of presenting a session on ‘What’s new in VS2010 and .NET 4.0’ for the St. Louis .NET User Group. Got to meet with lots of people there, so greets go to all . I had fun with the session; I liked talking about new technology and it’s pretty neat to see everyone and just mingle around with people in general. Pizza was great (thanks to last night’s sponsor: Quilogy) – I have to also thank Scott Spradlin for allowing me to present to the group. The session itself has the ...
This is one of a series of posts on my preparations for sessions on Azure and ORMs at Software Architect 2009. The plan vs actual for day five (The last day): Play, play, play with the technology. This is one of a series of posts on my preparations for sessions on Azure and ORMs at Software Architect 2009. The plan vs actual for day four (Thursday): Produce final drafts of each deck and post them so delegates can check out what I’m covering. DONE (link below) Play, play, play with the technology. DONE (a little) Read, read, read DONE And… produce outline skeleton demo sequence DONE (a little) The good bit: The best bit was getting the drafts of both decks “done” – done in the sense that I ...
I had a case today where I wanted to find all the spots within our application that a developer had explicitly set the BackColor property of a control at run-time. As you can imagine, a simple search ended up with my finding a ton of designer code where the generated code was setting the property. (It sure would be nice if Visual Studio would let you exclude comments and designer files from the search – but that’s not in VS2008 or VS2010 Beta 1, unless it’s well hidden in both.) Wildcards seems like ...

This is one of a series of posts on my preparations for sessions on Azure and ORMs at Software Architect 2009. The plan for day two: The Tuesday plan vs actual was … 100% spot on. Install Entity Framework CTP on Windows XP Mode. SUCCESS Install VS2010 into a Boot from HD Windows 7 VHD (Yep… back to plan A as I would much prefer to use VS2010 without a VM but also without installing it direct on my host Windows 7 which I want to keep reasonably clear) SUCCESS Revisit both decks. DONE Play with Entity ...
This is the second in a series of posts on my preparations for sessions on Azure and ORMs at Software Architect 2009. In case you don’t want to skim through the whole post, the main things I learnt in day one are: 1. Never forget that install errors can be caused by something as simple as a corrupt file! (My “battle” outlined below) 2. Virtual PC RC for Windows 7 isn’t perfect. It doesn’t like working with a VM created on an older version. (Details below) 3. There are some nice storage explorer tools ...
Thanks to Ray and Gavin for organising another top EdgeUG meeting in Microsoft Cardinal Place and for everyone who attended my talk on Hyper-V for Developers. The audience had to deal with a huge amount of technical information that I crammed into the hour - hopefully it didn't put them off their pizza. With announcement of.Net 4.0, VS2010 and other related products: One of common questions that I hear is “What’s next for BizTalk Server?”. My answer: it would probably be BizTalk Server 2009 R2. BizTalk Server 2006 R3 was renamed to BizTalk Server 2009 and we know the list of features new version provides. I wonder why BTS2009 and why not BTS2006 R3. I see the BTS2009 more of a technology parity with other Microsoft products. Yes, it does have some enhancements but does is qualify for a new major ...
Yes, I know I'm late. Please forgive me . In any case, the .NET 4.0 and C# 4.0 sessions materials are now available. You can download them from here and here, respectively. In hindsight, the .NET 4.0 presentation should've been called: What's new in .NET 4.0; and even then given the vastness of the material available, it should've been split into 2 sessions: What's new in Visual Studio 2010 and What's new in .NET 4.0 Framework. Given the 75 minutes available for the presentation, I decided to focus ...
In my continued exploration of C# 4.0, I wanted to put together a simple example of using the C# 4.0 “dynamic” keyword in conjunction with IronRuby. I’ve been shocked at how difficult it was to find code samples on the internet that actually do this. With much persistence (and some significant pointing in the right direction from Justin Etheredge) I got my simple example working. Given that there aren’t many great examples of calling IronRuby from C# 4.0 out there, I figured I better post the code. ...
Summary: In this post we will discuss the tooling that is at our disposal and also some of the benefits or not so beneficial features it brings to the table. Content Introduction Tooling Benefits of using it Introduction ASP.NET MVC is Microsoft's way of getting on the MVC wagon. One of my biggest disappointments when using VS 2010 was the much hyped about SharePoint IDE tools where missing in the beta release.
