One of my colleagues pointed me at Howard Baines as a recent example of a web consultancy already using Visual Studio 2010 and Entity Framework 4.0 to build web applications. I managed to grab a little time with co-founder Clive Howard (on twitter) to talk through some of the decisions, especially as I was intrigued to learn that they started out on Open Source Software including Ruby on Rails before switching to the .NET Framework. We discuss: Why switch to the .NET Framework? Entity Framework 4.0 ...

When workig on a project in VS2010 and performing a "run tests in context" the debugger was catching and halting on a test that fails, raising the exception AssertFailedException. I thought this was strange as the same test (in fact any test) that failed in VS2008 would simply just be noted in the test results as Failed... Turns out it's the way I've been running tests.. Both VS2008 and VS2010 have the same shortcut mappings: - "ctrl-r, t" for "Run tests in context" - "ctrl-r, ctrl-t" for "Debug ...
Yesterday’s West Palm Beach .Net User Group’s meeting was quiet special. Our Microsoft DE and speaker for our July meeting, Joe Healy, aka “devfish” (www.devfish.net) drove more than 250 miles to share with us his take on VS2010 and to show us his 36-hour old Windows Phone 7. Joe also promised to return to our group in November to dedicate a whole meeting to Windows Phone 7 as we had limited time to explore Microsoft’s innovative reincarnation of its mobile platform. Our meeting lasted a record 2.5 ...
So today I finally got around to playing a bit more with Silverlight. F# has been taking most of my spare time and I felt I needed to branch out into something different for a day or two… Now, before I go into this post… my disclaimer… I am a Silverlight noob – in fact I have focussed most of my development time at normal applications so the whole internet is a bit of a mystery to me… that being said I had some very definite goals for this posting… Setup my server so that it would work with the services ...

Intro One of the new additions in Expression Blend 4 is the Silverlight Databound Application Project template. I use that often when starting a new MVVM project. The template creates View and ViewModel folders and provides a good starting point for Model-View-ViewModel applications. The only downside is that this template is only available in Expression Blend and not in Visual Studio 2010. I’ve exported the project to a Visual Studio template to be able to use it in VS2010 too. Download The template ...
Recruit Officer: Have you given any thought to your future, son? Forrest Gump: "Thought"? Well, it appears that Microsoft has given some though to theirs with the new WebMatrix Beta. What is WebMatrix? WebMatrix gives you everything that you need to build Web sites using Windows. You download a small installer and then you can select which tools to install. I already have Expression Blend 4 and VS2010 Pro, so I’m only going to take WebMatrix and a DB (MSSQL SRV 08 R2 Express and leave defaults for ...

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the Grid in Silverlight/WPF today and decided that I’d share this with others. I made this diagram and the following xaml code snippet to remember how to position controls/etc in the grid. From looking at the image below, we have a 3x3 Grid that starts at 0. After you create a Grid, debugging is easier if you turn the ShowGridLines to true. Now its time to setup the RowDefinitions and ColumnDefinitions. We can create a button control now. You should pay special ...
I attended my first CodeStock this year and in short it was awesome. Like 100 billion hot dogs awesome. The travel there was crazy to say the least, but I met lots of new people, had a session go well and recorded 3 podcasts. So that is the short version. If you are on twitter and either follow me or followed the #codestock hash tag, you probably saw my airline craziness in Philly. It all started on Monday. Now that the Windows Phone 7 development tools have been out for a while, let’s talk about how you can use them. Windows Phone 7 ( WP7 ) has two application types that you can create, either Silverlight or XNA, and you can’t really mix the two together. The development environment for WP7 is a special edition of Visual Studio 2010 called Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone. This edition will be installed with the WP7 tools, even if you have a full edition of VS2010 already installed. While ...
I am scheduled to give a presentation at the Miramar .Net User Group on July 13, 2010 about MVC and the new features in MVC2. This will be similar to the talk I gave a few days ago at the LI .Net User Group in NY, yet will have more advanced content since the Miramar .Net User Group already had an introduction to MVC in a previous meeting. Here is the topic and speaker bio: What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new ...

This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Full source and binaries are now hosted on CodePlex. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going ...
Recently I have started working with VS2010 and Fx4. There have been various challenges. We also introduced a new Database Project in our solution. And found this error. The reason for this error is: the project system expects the stored procedure as a create statement only. The additional statements to drop if existing are not necessary within the project system. Project deployment takes care of detecting if the sproc already exists and if it needs to be updated. To resolve this error you can simply ...

As you might know, I lived and worked on LI, NY for 11 years before relocating to South Florida. As I will be visiting my family who still live there in the first week of June, I couldn't resist reaching out to Dan Galvez, LI .Net User Group Leader, and asking if he needed a speaker for June's meeting. Apparently the stars were lined up right and I am now scheduled to speak at my "home" group on June 3rd, which I am pretty excited about. Here is a brief abstract of my talk and speaker bio. What's ...
Are you a C# Programmer and can’t make it past a day without seeing or hearing someone mention F#? Today, I’m going to walk you through your first F# application and give you a brief introduction to the language. Sit back this will only take about 20 minutes. In October 2007, the senior vice president of the developer division ...
Going back to my old c++ days at university where we had all our code littered with preprocessor directives - I thought it made the code ugly and could never understand why it was useful. Today though I found a use in my C# application. The scenario – I had made various security levels in my application and tied my XAML to the levels by set by static accessors in code. An example of my XAML code for a Combobox to be enabled would be as follows… <ComboBox IsEnabled="{x:Static security:Security.SecurityC... ...

A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky. The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting. I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there. I got ...
With MVC2 officially released, I was involved in a few conversations regarding the feasibility of upgrading existing MVC 1.0 projects to quickly leverage the newly introduced MVC features. Luckily, Microsoft has proactively addressed this question for both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 and many online resources discussing the upgrade process are a "Bing/Google Search" away. As I will happen to be speaking about MVC2 and Visual Studio 2010 at the Ft Lauderdale ArcSig .Net User Group Meeting on April ...

I think back to the days of the first versions of Visual Studio (when it was called Visual Studio .NET, remember?) and I think about how far Microsoft has come with this IDE. It really is the best IDE on the market. There is so much to this IDE it is amazing. It now can really handle managing your complete software application development lifecycle. For me, it is (besides Windows 7) the best and most successful product Microsoft has developed. You can obviously get this now and it is available on ...

IntelliTrace is a new feature in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition. I see this valuable tool as a “Program Execution Recorder” that captures information about events and calls taking place as soon as we hit the VS2010 play (Start Debugging) button or the F5 key. Many online resources already discuss IntelliTrace and the benefit it brings to both developers and testers alike so I see no value of just repeating this information. In this brief blog entry, I would like to share with you how I will ...
When converting your projects to VS2010 you get the question to migrate them to .net4. But even if you do not do that VS set the ASP.NET version to 4 for setup projects. And then when you try to install your application on a machine that does not have .NET 4 installed you will get the error message: “Could not open key: Software\Microsoft\ASP.NET\... Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel” What you need to do is to change the ASP.NET version ...
Although the team's intentions might have been good, the new help system in Visual Studio 2010 is a huge step backwards (more like a cannonball-shot-kind-of-leap really) from the one we all know (and love?) in Visual Studio 2008 and 2005 (and heck, even VS6). Its biggest problem, from my point of view, is the total and complete lack of the Help Index feature: you know...the thing where you just go and type in what you're looking for and it filters down the list of results automatically. For me this ...

Fellow Blog Readers: I figured I use my first blog post on GeeksWithBlogs to introduce myself. Got an email this morning.(yes I checked and it wasn’t an April Fools joke) congratulating me on becoming a Microsoft MVP. From the "is this really news?" department... From looking at the currently available versions of 2010, there is no direct upgrade path from VB6 to VS2010. Anyone still using VB6 and wishing to upgrade to VS2010 has two options: Use the upgrade tool from an earlier version of VS (like 2005 or 2008) and then run the upgrade in VS2010 to get the rest of the way... or rewrite your code. I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader which is the better option. I'd like to take a moment to point out the ...

In Windows Azure platform there are 3 storage we can use to save our data on the cloud. They are the Table, Blob and Queue. Before the Chinese New Year Microsoft announced that Azure SDK 1.1 had been released and it supports a new type of storage – Drive, which allows us to operate NTFS files on the cloud. On Saturday 35(ish) developers met up on rainy day in Birmingham to take part in an Open Space Code day on the Windows Azure Platform. Around 5 of us had experience of Open Space meetings or developing for Azure prior to the day – and I think only two of us had experience of both :-) As I was on point to keynote the day and make sure it was a success, I did turn up with a few concerns matched by a good deal of excitement. My primary concern was that people would expect to be trained – and the Open ...
I did a session yesterday on Entity Framework 4 using Visual Studio 2010 RC. Unfortunately VS2010 crashed on me 4 or 5 times during my presentation whilst editing code (I resolved it by copy and paste from Notepad!). I was pretty convinced the issue was related in some weird way to the amount of other beta stuff I have on my machine plus a history of various CTP installs of VS2010. However it turns out there is a more fundamental problem with Intellisense in the release candidate. The good news is ...
