One of the less obvious features available in Windows Live Writer is the ability to automatically ping (send a signal) to popular blog aggregators every time you publish something to your blog. This feature actively pings the servers of the blog aggregators you specify and to indicate when there is new material. To use this feature in Writer click on Ping Servers in the Options dialog (navigation: Tools | Options | Ping Servers). Then add the names of the servers you want to ping. Start off with: ...
As I mentioned before, I've been using Win7 full time on my laptop. Win7 ships with IE8 beta which has some nice improvements, but overall isn't ready for prime time just yet (such are the perils of beta software.) My recent experiences with FireFox 3 (prior to installing Win7) have left me somewhat cold, so my browser of choice has been Google Chrome. Overall, I really like Chrome a lot and there have only been a few instances where it wouldn't work well with something. One of those things is a ...

This post is being written in Windows Live Service. I am wondering if it will work with geekswithblogs.net.

I love Xbox 360 when we talking about: 1) XNA - great free tool for game developers 2) Boku/Kodu – great visual game language system 3) Games – plenty good games awesome Xbox Live 4) X360 Prize – not too expensive and good quality (now… http://gizmodo.com/5099721/... Introduction This Sunday I upgraded my DELL Latitude | D830 from Windows Vista Business 64 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The build version is Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. I ran an upgrade to test how well the setup would play with my currently installed applications and configuration settings. My expectations we met and in some cases exceeded. For example, soon after launching the setup a compatibility checker was launched. This screen scanned my current OS (Vista) to make sure all installed applications ...

I got my renewal notice this morning for a service that I was using. The service would fetch email from my Hotmail account and put it in their POP3 servers. I had GMail set to then retrieve the messages from the service’s servers. Well, this service is no longer necessary because Hotmail now has POP3 service with their free accounts (which I found out by reading this). All you need to know is how to setup GMail to access a POP3 server using these values: POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995) POP SSL ...
In my last blog post I embedded a movie that I had uploaded to SoapBox. The path that video, and myself, took to get to that point is EPIC. It all started with recording the video with my trusty Sony camcorder. I copied over the file to my Windows 7 machine…file format is MPG. The size was 118 MB, but SoapBox has a 100MB limit. Easiest way to alter that: Movie Maker. As I’m all about the Windows Live suite of tools, I opened up Movie Maker Beta. I was a huge fan of Movie Maker 2.6, and I hadn’t had ...
I know I am not the first to mention Windows Live Writer as a great blogging tool. I’ll mention it anyway, maybe someone will see this post who missed the various positive mentions from other posters (and not just the GWB folks). The install was painless aside from unchecking about seven other MS/MSN junk I did not need. I have used it for a little while now and have had no issues publishing or updating posts. The two main items I like about Live Writer are saving a post before publishing it (i.e. ...
Ever since I got my first digital camera I was trying to create panoramic photos. This means take multiple shots of the view around me and then stitch them together into one image to create a panorama. At the time I used a tool called PTGui and below you can see couple attempts from that time. Harbor in Long Beach, CA (3 photos) Castle near Vienna, Austria (2 photos) This tool is still around, but nowadays we have some easier options. Windows Live Photo Gallery If you use Windows Live Photo Gallery ...
HELLO! Oh man I've missed you guys. I haven't posted in forever and I'm very sorry for it! I'm trying to get this damned Windows Live Writer working with GWB and absolutely cannot get it to work (have been trying since 12/4!). I've found other GWB posters that have written about it but I think Live Writer came out with a new format and they haven't updated something. Either that or I have something wrong, if anyone can help PLEASE let me know. In recent news I've gotten an Xbox! Which means XNA development ...
I'm playing with the Windows 7 beta. It includes a DVD Maker program. There is no Movie Maker in the beta, but Windows Live has a Movie Maker beta for download (more Internet/cloud features, but not the same as Movie Maker for XP). The DVD Maker too is limited. You can add movies to a project, adjust a few options (4:3 vs. 16:9, etc.), select a menu style and go. A major problem I have is that many of my movies from my Sony HDD Handycam are short segments. I may have 10 short segments of soccer game, ...
When I was trying to run the Windows Live Enabled Website that is shipped with the Windows Live Tools for Visual Studio November 2008 CTP (I had blogged about this earlier at http://geekswithblogs.net/r... and you can download the CTP from http://dev.live.com ) against IIS 7, I got the error “Could not load file or assembly ‘System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.6.0.0….” error. Interestingly this error wasn’t showing up if I create the ...
Recently, installed a bunch of new Windows Live components such as Messenger, etc. That update extended my HTTP_USER_AGENT string to beyond 260 characters, which unfortunately IE then, when asked via javascript, reports itself back as IE 6 – this causes the Modal dialog boxes in SharePoint for things like adding web parts to zones to report a message that “Not enough storage is available to complete this operation”. So, since this is an x64 machine, I need to trim down the string which is taken from ...
I’ve always been a big fan of Windows Live OneCare for all my personal machines. That’s why I was surprised to hear that Microsoft Windows Live OneCare is going away in the 2009. Fortunately the key piece I used it for is being replaced by Morro, basic protection from malware—including viruses, spyware, rootkits, and Trojans. Here’s some more detail on the announcement from Michael Cherry at Directions on Microsoft: “In order to increase the number of Windows computers with basic protection from ...

If you’re running Grisoft AVG with Web Shield and trying the new Windows Live Messenger you might be experiencing connection issues.

One of Microsoft’s announcements on CES09 was Microsoft Tag. Do you remember last try of Microsoft to create mobile barcodes on Live platform? I remember it. So why Windows Live Barcode was deprecated, while Microsoft creates new one? What the key difference between Quick Response approach, barely adopted by industry and new colorful MS stuff? Let’s try to understand differences and approximate future fail or success on this technology. Key differences: The only information contains inside MS Tag ...
For those who don't want to go through the long post that follows, here's the short attention span summary. <Short Attention Span Summary> Windows 7 is a pretty neat. Installs quick, seems to have lots of neat features and I'm looking forward to watching this progress to RTM. Only thing I don't like is the loss of the "classic" start menu option. </Short Attention Span Summary> So just like so many other MSDN subscribers yesterday, I raced over to download the Windows 7 Beta that was ...

Ever felt like it would be cool to upload photos straight from Photo Gallery? Well I definitely have. I almost downloaded Google's Picasa 3 just to be able to do this. The upload tool that's provided on Facebook.com always fails on me, so creating albums in Facebook was just too much of a pain to mess with. Fortunately Will Duff, a developer intern this past summer at Microsoft created a plug-ins for both Photo Gallery and Movie Maker. Awesome news!!! Here's the info: Do you share photos on Facebook? ...
Here's a quick overview of what was most trafficked in 2008 on WTFNext. This is made possible by the results from Google Analytics and unique pageviews that have been recorded since early November. I'm using this information to gauge what is being found as useful and to help make WTFNext as useful as possible. What I've learned from the results is in general, the posts I make are useful to someone. Which is great news to begin with. Also, I've decided to start a separate blog soon on Second Life ...

That’s just a test post written in Windows Live Writer. Anyway, I just decided to check how it works. If this is displayed properly then I’ll dig a little around Windows Live Writer, because it doesn’t look bad.

See you next post!

It has been discusssed and suggested several times, however the MAC team are finally working on a huge update for MAC Messenger. Users as from the early months of 2009 are expected to have a new feature in their MAC Messenger which is considered to be the audio and video chat. "The new Windows Live Messenger for Mac with AV support should be available as a beta sometime early next year." Download MAC Messenger from here: http://www.download.com/Mic... ...
So I don't know if anyone has noticed something similar recently but shortly after my recent trip away I found that my Posts via "Windows Live Writer" were somehow being truncated or something similar and the Paragraph and Tagging syntax was getting muddled on my WordPress site. At first I thought it might be Windows Live Writer as I had recently upgraded to a beta version 14.x... , so I downgraded (very bloody difficult that...), tried other blogging tools and found that this did not appear to be ...
I am not sure how many out there have machines that are capable of running a 64 bit operating system, but my new machine is. I originally installed x86 Vista (32 bit) and pretty quickly removed it in favor of Windows XP. I know that I am not the only one who has done that. I have been reading quite a bit that Vista is Windows ME version 2 (for all of you out there that remember that catastrophe). Vista was operating like it had a boat anchor around it’s neck even with system specifications like Intel ...
For the past four months my controllers have had two constructors: one that received my dependencies and one parameterless that called Windsor directly, because parameterless constructors are a requirement for the default MVC ControllerFactory. (These constructors did have a huge //HACK comment on them.) Wiring up IOC with zero friction was quite simple. First, we need to make a new ControllerFactory. In it, we will ask Windsor to give us the controller. public class CastleWindsorControllerFactory ...
I just had the privilege (trauma?) of setting up my new machine and had to install everything from the scratch. I will save the rest of my experiences, for another post, but for now I thought of sharing, what I had to install to work with the latest stuff for Web Development in ASP.NET. These are pretty quick to install and helps you build cutting edge websites. 1. Install Visual Studio 2008 (you can get a trial version from http://msdn.microsoft.com/h... or the free ...

The Windows Live Team put up a neat bunch of controls that can be used in your ASP.NET Websites. In fact once you install the Windows Live Tools for Visual Studio 2008 from http://dev.live.com/tools/ you get a few server controls in the toolbox as well as website templates for Visual Studio 2008 project/website. I wanted to demonstrate how you can quickly add a video to your website that is being streamed from the Silverlight Streaming Service, all within 5 minutes. Pre-requisites 1. Visual Studio ...
My project is on the move, literally. We're migrating from our old data center to a new one; everything is being brought up on new hardware. Since we're using full and incremental backups, an important sanity check is to make sure all the data has been restored, which is being done using the following query: select 'select ''' + TABLE_SCHEMA + ''' as TableSchema, ''' + TABLE_NAME + ''' as TableName, count(*) as [Rows] from ' + TABLE_SCHEMA + '.' + TABLE_NAME + ' union' as [SQL] from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES ...
I have talked about both Windows Live FolderShare and Windows Live Sync in the past. In fact, the last time I talked about Live Sync it was to say that it was FolderShare rebranded. Starting next month, Microsoft will be officially announcing Windows Live Sync, which you can think of as FolderShare 2.0. It will look familiar and offer the same features as FolderShare, plus: More folders and files—sync up to 20 folders with 20,000 files each. Integration with Windows Live ID—no more extra sign-in ...
Just received an e-mail that as of Nov 23, 2008 (below), Microsoft will no longer be marketing Windows Live OneCare. It’s unknown what that means, other than them closing the affiliate program (where marketers get paid if you install it). It is unreasonable that they will discontinue the product, since they have just launched Small Business Server 2008 and Windows Live OneCare Server. I’m wondering if the marketing department that was contracted, was fired. Windows Live OneCare to Close November ...
*Moved to: Windows Live ID and OpenIDIt seams that Microsoft is making an attempt to integrate with OpenID. With the announcement that “Windows Live ID commits to support of OpenID” I thought a little investigation would be in order. You need to setup a new Live ID on the Live-INT service, you can use any email, but make sure that you do not use your production password!Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
In AJAX based applications its common that user might end up breaking your AJAX calls by clicking on numerous places in very short interval of time. Let us assume there is a page where there are several of hyperlinks which make WebService calls and do some stuffs on callback. If user clicks on five hyperlinks being impatient or may be just for fun, there will be five different WebService calls made. All of those calls had the same parameters or UI state while they were invoked. But on completion ...
Here's a simple way to avoid postbacks in your site, still be SEO friendly and degrade gracefully to JavaScript free browsers (and handle middle clicks and copy&paste) in ASP.NET MVC using jQuery. First, we'll create an alternate MasterPage called No.master with no content, only one ContentPlaceHolder: <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="MainContent" runat="server" /> Now, we're able to tell via HTTP Headers if a Request is an Ajax Request, so we'll write a new method in our Controller Base class ...

This could be a common problem who are not using SQL Express. If you run an Azure application you may find it seeks for SQL Express instance in your machine if you do not have already. You may also find "An error occurred while processing this request." error due to this reason while you try creating tables from your models by StorageClient.TableStorage.... All you need to do is fire up Visual Studio and open the config file for DevelopmentStorage at C:\Program Files\Windows Azure ...

Great news everybody! I just got word that Day 2 of the PDC (that's Tuesday), at 12:45pm, Steven Sinofsky will be giving a 30 minute Open Space session on "Windows 7 Keynote Discussion." The Senior Vice President of Windows and Windows Live will be in Open Space at 12:45pm to discuss with you, our customers, what you think about the announcements made in Tuesday morning's keynote on Windows 7. Those who are excited like me about the news of jQuery integration into Visual Studio, started adopting jQuery replacing ASP.NET AJAX Client side API. Microsoft also declared there will be a patch for Visual Studio which will support jQuery as well as intellisene for that. For the enthusiasts who just can't for it, here is the way how we can start developing using jQuery with full intellisense support inside Visual Studio 2008: 1. Download jquery-1.2.6-vsdoc.js 2. Inside your JavaScript files, add ...
There is a well-known issue with WPF RadioButton controls with data binding: when a radio button is unchecked the data binding is not undone. For example, suppose you have the following two radio buttons in the same group linked to a the "IsSuccess" (of type bool?) attribute of an object: <RadioButton Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="0" GroupName="rbGroup" Margin="8,0,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Center" Content="Success" x:Name="rbSuccess" IsChecked="{Binding Path=IsSuccess, Mode=TwoWay, Converter={StaticResource ...
Suppose you have three tables in your database where one of them specifies a many-to-many relationship between the other two (example from AdventureWorks): Suppose also that you have a method such as GetVendors(int productID) that will retrieve all the vendors for a given product through the ProductVendors table (that is , the many-to-many table). Now, if this method is exposed via a WCF service, when your client calls it you will see an exception like this one: "System.ServiceModel.Commun... ...
