When working with asp.net and now XAML I lean towards code view over the designer, a preference of course, but considering this feature I guess I am not alone. When working with events in XAML you can simply type "Click=" and the nice little helper jumps up asking what event handler you'd like to wire it up to or even create a new one and the stub will be created. NICE! As an added little beauty, this doesn't automatically send you off into the code behind. Why-o-Why isn't it the same for asp.net ...
The SQL Server 2008 CTPs came out after Visual Studio 2008 was released. There's a compatibility issue when you try to open a database connection to SQL 2008 from the VS 2008 designer tool. You may receive the following error message: “This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.” This happens when you select the the server, the database, and then click on "Add" to create the database connection. Fortunately, Microsoft released a CTP to address ...
UPDATE: More posts on the subject xUnit.net RC3 Just Released Earlier this week, I wrote about the latest release of xUnit.net RC2. Since that time, Brad Wilson and Jim Newkirk released a new version to fix some of the issues with regards to TestDriven.NET integration and ASP.NET MVC integration. You can read more about the issues here. As always you can get the latest bits here. The Installer If you browse to the releases page of xUnit.net, you will notice an installer. This installer will help ...
As I mentioned during my rant earlier this week, localization is fairly difficult with WPF. As it stands right now, the only real tool support Microsoft offers for localization is a tool called LocBaml.exe, which they clearly mark as "not production-ready." Samples available online describe how to utilize it, but there are significant drawbacks to its current implementation. First, since LocBaml generates CSV files, it is difficult or impossible to localize most anything other than simple strings; ...
One of the new features in the Visual Studio 2008 release is the XSLT Compiler tool xsltc.exe. The documentation can be found here. This tool will precompile the xslt sheets into an assembly. It has been my experience over the years that the xsl mappings change more often than the message flows. With the xsltc.exe tool the mappings can be changed, compiled and installed without changing the Biztalk orchestrations. First you need to create the xsl DLLs: xsltc.exe /settings:document+,script+ myXsl.xsl ...
What is new in Visual Studio 2008 A quick list of some of the new features are: Multi-Targeting support Web Designer and CSS support ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript support Project Designer Data LINQ – Language Integrated Query The features listed and explained in this paper are not complete and this document intends to give you a forehand to start off with VS 2008. 1. UDPATE: October 2, 2009 There is a better way of doing it with Ajax Control Toolkit version 3.0.30930 which works with .NET 3.5 SP1 and Visual Studio 2008 SP1. Please read this post for a step by step instruction One of the common queries I get across my sessions is that, the File Upload control doesnt work inside an Update panel. All of us would like to implement a Gmail File Upload kind of interface and when you try to implement a similar thing using UpdatePanel (which works like a charm for other ...
UPDATE: I see a lot of comments which make me feel that this post has been useful. There have been a lot of queries also around the inability to find the download link. For the benefit of those, I am posting direct link here Download Mobile Web Form Templates for Visual Studio 2008 Now, for some for information around why it has been missing Visual Studio releases. According to Omar Khan from the Web Development Tools team, ASP.NET Mobile Webforms are really only useful for last generation ‘WAP’ ...
Mike Snow has an article about creating a new SL2 project, Bill Reiss on adding keyboard input to our game, Shawn Wildermuth's Code Camp materials, Laurence Moroney on Dynamic Languages, Jesse Liberty on his SLMicroBlog, Karen Corby and Mark Rideout on Accessibility, and Lee on Listbox Styling. In our previous tutorial we have seen how we can use XML axis properties to consume XML returned from a web service in Silverlight applications, in this example however we will look at how XML Literals and Embedded Expressions can be used to easily write fast and efficient Web Services. *Note XML Literals and Embedded Expression are Visual Basic 9 Exclusive features you might need Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 installed. XML Literals and Embedded Expression are not limited to Silverlight/WPF ...
I did my first Magenic Webinar (webcast) today, and I think it went really well. Andy Schwarz (my co-presenter) does a great job of covering all the non-demo parts and definitely kept the pace right where it needed to be. The topic was Visual Studio 2008 in general, and LINQ / AJAX specifically. It was a lot of fun building the 3 demos and I'll probably do something similar again soon. We got some really good questions as well, including a couple I need to go research. I also saw at least one familiar ...
I have talked about the SlickEdit Tools and Gadgets in the past (here and here) and have always been impressed with both of them. Previously, the SlickEdit Tools were only available for Visual Studio 2005. Now that Visual Studio 2008 is here, SlickEdit has released an update that works with both VS2005 and VS2008. The catch here is that this is much more than a simple update. The major difference is that the tools have been organized into two products: the Editing Toolbox (datasheet), which contains ...
You really start to appreciate the little things you have from modern languages and development environments. I use Visual Studio 2008 now with all of the Intellisense goodness, tools, designers, et al. But, like anything you start to take it for granted until in this case you're forced to work on a legacy, proprietary scripting language like the one in the data collection software that we use. The program is called VisiBar and it's primarily used for barcoding. This application uses it's own language ...
Last weekend I blogged about creating ADO.NET Data Service with the help of of Entity Framework Tools CTP. I do hope you had a good luck installing this tool but I just realized that I forgot to share with you my experience of the installation. The first time I tried to install it on my machine, I got the warning dialog saying the installation requires a patch for Visual Studio 2008. You need to stop the installation of Entity Framework tools and apply this patch first. It can be downloaded patch ...

I know I'm a little slow in doing so, but today I finally sat down and went through all the Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1.0 Templates. I was incredibly impressed with some of it and sorely disappointed with other parts. Everyone has said it is really easy to use this technology and I agree. I have a little PhotoShop experience from my web design days. I have dabbled in some animated gifs, Flash Creations, PDF Creations, Corel Draw, Paint .Net, and who knows what else. I opened up the VS 2008 Template and ...
I was looking at the site Visual Studio Gallery at what was available as plug-ins for the new VS2008. Here are some that I know are cool and others that looked rather promising: PowerCommands for VS2008 This seems to be the most viewed one and it does add a lot of quick and easy commands to your right-click menus. Commands include quite a few include Open Containing Folder and Open Command Prompt. Nice one. Source Code Outliner Look at your code in a treeview to easily access methods, properties, ...
In my previous post, I gave you the introduction of ADO.NET Data Service. Now I will show you step by step how to create an ADO.NET data service using Visual Studio 2008 and the Entity Framework Tools (December 2007 CTP). I am going to use the Northwind sample database to implement the service in this example. The Northwind database can be downloaded from: http://go.microsoft.com/fwl... 1. Create an ASP.NET Web application (C#) in Visual Studio. Let's name the project NorthwindDataService ...

If you ever encountered any of the problems with Visual Studio 2008 listed below, you might want to apply the latest path to your VS 2008. Bugs in HTML Source View performance • In Visual Studio 2008, you have a page that contains an ActiveX control. The ActiveX control has more than two levels of subproperties. When you type inside the page, the source editor stops responding for several seconds. • The View Code command in Visual Studio 2008 is not available for a long time. • When you open large ...

This is a story I mentioned in the wrap-up entry for today's Computers 2K8 radio show that I co-host but I also wanted to be sure it got an entry of it's own so people find out about it. Microsoft's DreamSpark program gives university students Microsoft professional-level developer and design tools for FREE. This includes Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Microsoft Expression Studio, and the XNA 2.0 Game Studio. The program is currently available in 11 ...

As Microsoft readies Windows 2008 for launch coupled with SQL server 2008 launch and the re-launch of Visual Studio 2008 ?? I am left feeling a little uneasy... When Visual Studio 2008 hit the streets it quickly became apparent that it was incompatible with a number of other products not least BizTalk 2006 R2 on recently launched!!! It is now also clear that Microsoft aren't supporting BizTalk 2006 R2 on Windows Serve 2008 either and of course it goes without saying that BizTalk will not support ...
Another great meeting!!! Tonight I walked in with Bill; I got to help push the mounds of food and drinks in. As usual the meeting was held at the Microsoft Malvern campus. The meeting started with Dani Diaz our local MS rep. His course was named VS c# Tips and Tricks for the MS Visual Studio 2008 IDE. Dani started out with showing us around VS 2008, key commands, explaining the versioning and how it works, etc. Some of the key commands that he showed were pretty cool, ones I never saw before. Then ...

I attended a user group presentation from Daniel Moth last night on Visual Studio 2008 and .net 3.5. I won't go on about the wonders of .net 3.5 as I'm sure you are well aware of them, but what did take me last night was the backward compatibility of it. I knew that VS2008 supported .net 2.0 and 3.0, but wasn’t aware that I could take advantage of so many new features still using .net 2.0. I would expect javascript intellisense to be supported and CSS, they aren't anything to do with .net, right! ...
Finally, and after a grand effort, we got a final release of GAX/GAT February 2008 Release. Mainly the most important improvements are that now you can use GAX side by side with Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 and now you don't have to do the painful task to unregister all your guidance packages prior to uninstall the previous version of GAX. In this particular release, we made an Upgrade than an Installer so you won't have to uninstall GAX, it will be just a click on the msi to get it ...
Maybe it's not so fresh information but it's worth mention here as TFS users would read this. Microsoft released fully configured virtual machine images with Team Foundation Server 2008 installed. There are two images: one with Visual Studio 2008 and one without it. After running you will have the possibility to play with all features as everything is configured and just works. For example you can test new build features and compare it to your current installation. One disadvantage is that you will ...
Here's a tool that completely slipped by me. I've been using ApexSQL for generation of SQL scripts for creating schema and data. Just want to make sure everyone saw this from Scott Gu today One of the things we are trying to do with VS 2008 is to more frequently release public patches that roll-up bug-fixes of commonly reported problems. For those of us that implement INotifyPropertyChanged on our state objects, the new Automatic Properties feature of Visual Studio 2008 hasn't been very useful. In fact, the snippet prop that used to create a private variable and associated public property has now been replaced by an Automatic Property. Thanks to a comment by SnYnE on this blog post, there is an easy way to get the functionality back. The good folks at JetBrains have recently announced that Resharper 4.0 Early Access Program will be available in two weeks. It's like one of those long awaited things like Duke Nukem Forever, but it looks like R# will beat it to the punch, fortunately for me. For those like me, I can honestly say I haven't been as productive in Visual Studio 2008 as I can say I have been without it. Many people will use the workaround as stated many times around the blogs, but I've just stayed away until they can ...
System Requirements To view and run the Service Factory assets in your development environment, you need the following software installed on your computer: Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista operating system Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (Visual Studio Professional Edition or Visual Studio Team Suite) Guidance Automation Extensions (July 2007 Community Technology Preview) In addition to the preceding requirements, if you want to install the Service Factory source code, ...
In my copious amount of free time I've been messing around with network analysis and security. I've always been generally interested in networking technology, but have never really had much practical exposure to it. Sometimes, however, it is nice to be able to analyze a network and see what kind of information is actually coming across the wire. In my last article I mentioned a tool called WireShark which is a free, open source network analyzer aka packet sniffer. WireShark is a great tool and has ...
Talking to someone at our user group this evening, I got the bad news that the Acropolis project will see no more CTP releases. It seems that the project is now in the hands of the Patterns & Practices group. From the Acropolis website : "We are very excited to be entering the next phase of the project where we will begin to roll many of the Acropolis concepts into future versions of the .NET Framework for the desktop and Silverlight. Unfortunately, while we figure out exactly how to go about ...
Oh dear, what a long time since my last blog - a hectic pre Christmas projects, a three week Christmas and another major software development in January have really had an effect. Fortunately I'm getting back on track with new development and once I'm back from a holiday in the Caribbean I'm hoping to get some serious research into new technologies including the MVC framework from Microsoft and getting my CI Factory installations up to date. As part of this new push, I looked into finally taking ...

I stumbled upon an excellent utility for WCF Testing that comes with Visual Studio 2008 - WCFTestClient. The tool is an simple way to test WCF clients HTTP and TCP bindings.
