[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... The Adapter Pack 2.0 for BizTalk has been released in public beta recently, and among the WCF Line Of Business adapters it contains the WCF SQL adapter. This exposes SQL Server connections as WCF service endpoints, and lets you connect to a SQL Server source using the standard ServiceModel stack. The adapter pack will be released under the BizTalk brand, but the adapters themselves are not limited to BizTalk – the WCF SQL adapter can be used natively ...
The Problem If you have been a BizTalk developer long enough, you will know that application lifecycle management has always been a pain point when it comes to managing BizTalk projects. The Out-of-Box support available in BizTalk Server is not too great for things like automated builds, continuous integration, code analysis, code coverage, unit testing... I can go on and on, but I am sure you get the picture. Thankfully, most of these are set to improve with the upcoming release of BizTalk Server ...

Note: The ASP to ASP.NET Migration tool was designed when ASP.NET v1.0 was just out and it does most of the conversion related to the then model. Also, there are a few known issues and it doesn't do a near to perfect conversion. If you are starting with ASP.NET development, the latest version is ASP.NET 3.5 which is a part of Visual Studio 2008 and I believe it provides conversion from classic ASP as well. As a part of the upcoming Virtual Tech Days, I am trying to demonstrate on migrating from ASP ...

With many a months gone by since I last saw a XAML demo @ Microsoft (ok I admit, years!!), I finally got down to working on some WPF. Looking at some components from DevSource for the nice Ribbon Bar examples, I hooked up and did this It was surprisingly functional and the tooltips were all working Getting several WPF samples to work together was as easy as doing a WinForms development, simply placing the XAML elements into the appropriate nested area. The DevSource docking bays are very well behaved ...
This is the most demanded scenario for the one who are using Asp.net AJAX Control Toolkit, I mean I have seen most of the people asking for this feature on asp.net forum. Unfortunately, we have no such functionality provided in Modal Popup because the control get rendered once the page is loaded and the Modal Popup is just a JavaScript which work is just to display a div which is hidden. Here is a little work around for those who wants to pass parameter to user control using Modal Popup. Basically, ...
In the UK I am the technical editor for the MSDN Flash. This weeks edition was a special focused on free software. I gathered together some of the best downloads based on recommendations from friends, colleagues and customers (which in case you were wondering is an overlapping group of individuals) plus a few of my personal favourites. I have tried to get something for everyone. From fairly generic utilities such as Free Download Manager and Unlocker, specialist tools such as SketchPath for XPath ...
I just got back from a business trip and sitting there on the counter was a copy of my latest book from Wrox! This book (my 20th) is titled Professional ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX. This was a fun book and I wrote this with some great co-authors including Matt Gibbs, Dan Wahlin, and Dave Reed. Amazon says that the book will be available on February 3rd (not too far away). Here is some of the introduction I wrote for the book: ----------------------------- ASP.NET revolutionized Web application development. ...
I have been writing a lot of unit tests over the past month using the Microsoft Test (MSTest) unit testing framework that is now part of Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition (and higher SKUs). Currently I have about 223 unit tests covering 39 classes (about 18K lines of code, 325 methods and 176 properties) with a code coverage percent of 97%. The classes that I’m testing previously had NUnit tests (although not as many as I currently have) and used NCover and NCover Explorer for my code coverage ...
Yesterday, one my my friend ask me a query about sending some 500+ emails using an asp.net page. Sending bulk email using asp.net is obviously an issue. I mean, You cannot keep the page on the post back state for the five minutes. Your page will get expired and even if you increase the Request Timeout period it is still not a good approach. So for that, There are couple of approaches like 1. You can have a table in which you store all the emails and create a Windows Service or Schedule Task to read ...
In my previous post I explained a little history of why this blog has come about – but now I wanted to explain why the heck you might read it :-) You should expect: Information on the very latest developer related technologies for building applications for Windows – client, server and cloud. A strong bias towards data - Object Relational Mapping, “Data in the Cloud”, Syncing data, RDBMS systems, N-tier data etc. Specifically I will be initially covering the ADO.NET Entity Framework, ADO.NET Data ...

I recently did an upgrade on a scenario that for whatever reason I had not faced before. It was a dual-server TFS 2005 installation and the server had Visual Studio 2005 and Team Explorer 2005 installed as well as WSS 2.0. If you are trying to upgrade a server like this one, here are some recommendations: Uninstall Team Explorer. Well, that's what I did but it may not be necessary, read on for details... the installation guide states that if you are installing 2008 SP1 on a server that also has Team ...

Ok, so I know it has been a long time since a post, but it has been really busy with work and family. I have been busy coding and learning lots of new stuff. I work with a great bunch of developers and my current team lead is a great mentor. Well for the new year the wife and I decided to get back into shape. I started hitting the gym and so did she but she is also doing weight watchers with a friend. One of the things they do is they have to calculate points on a daily basis. I am a big fan of using XML comments in code and actually have a few Visual Studio macros which allow me to “inherit” the documentation from an overridden member. Every once in a while, I end up pulling in a comment with a filterpriority XML tag. This tag is very prevalent in the BCL but I have never been able to find documentation on what it actually means. To see what I mean, let’s take a look at part of the definition for System.Object. In the XML comments, you will see that the class itself has ...

Silverlight makes creating compelling Rich Internet Applications fairly easy. That said the cut down version of .Net means some things that you would do within an application have to be relegated to Web Services which can benefit from the full .Net library. One of these is of course Azure, after all that is the whole point - an online store of Business Logic and data. The application I'm working on uses Silverlight on the front end, and Azure will provide the bulk of the backend. There are reasons ...

I've just spent that last week building a translator, allowing us to convert a new customers catalogue data into a form our sales system can cope with. Luckily the source data was XML, so it was already in a form I could use, but there was no schema, and the structure was a bit flaky in places. I started off trying to read through the data, but the structure was just to messy, in the end I figured out I could probably do most of the grunt work with XPath. This approach seemed promising, and I got ...
Issue 1: Remote Debug You can't remotely debug an application from Visual Studio 2008 when the installed debugger on the remote (target) machine is from the Visual Studio 2005 install. You must install the Visual Studio 2008 remote debugger on the target computer to attach to the remote debugger from the Visual Studio 2008 IDE. I believe side-by-side installation of the VS 2005 and VS 2008 remote debugger is fine. However, I don't believe they can run concurrently. Issue 2: MSTest If you try to run ...
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... The first public beta of BizTalk Server 2009 was released yesterday, and fulfils expectations by falling in line with the 2008 server and development stack, and offering a few functional extras. I've had a quick run through of it and made some initial notes below. The MSBuild integration is interesting although I haven't got a good grasp yet on whether it will replace custom MSBuild tasks to aid deployment; apparently it works nicely with TFS, but ...

I just had the privilege (trauma?) of setting up my new machine and had to install everything from the scratch. I will save the rest of my experiences, for another post, but for now I thought of sharing, what I had to install to work with the latest stuff for Web Development in ASP.NET. These are pretty quick to install and helps you build cutting edge websites. 1. Install Visual Studio 2008 (you can get a trial version from http://msdn.microsoft.com/h... or the free ...
If you're developing webparts using VSeWSS and going to run the setup.bat that that VSeWSS creates, you might need to modify the deploy solution line before running it. The deploysolution instruction that VSeWSS adds contains the -local argument. This is all good if you're going to run it on an implementation with only 1 WFE, but for farms with 2 or more WFE's then you will need to change -local to -immediate. I also make it a habit to call the execadmsvcjobs command before and after adding and deploying. ...

Recently the Exchange server at work has been upgraded to an Exchange 2007 SP1 server. With this has come the chance to finally get rid of the MAPI CDO solutions we have, by switching to using Exchange Web Services (EWS). I've spent quite a while looking for easy ways of doing this, and for the majority of the time, it seems ok, but the biggest issue I've had (and unfortunately the solution I needed) was accessing public folders. Specifically public folders in a hierarchy. Public Folders\ \Testing ...

I spent today some time integrating program_options boost library, since I encountered some difficulties I would like to share my experiences. Firstly, I compile my project with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. Project is build with UNICODE enabled and also I use stlport 5.2. program_options library requires you to compile lib files in order to use it, it is not enough to just include headers. You could download libs from www.boostpro.com, but as to my knowledge they do not provide versions compiled ...

Introduction Creating custom controls is not as difficult as they actually appear, but before we go creating custom controls lets first look at the difference between Custom Controls (CC) and Custom User-Controls (CU). Simply put Custom Controls (CC) are skinable, themable and reusable controls that once created can be used by simply loading the assembly in any project, where are Custom User-Controls are user controls that can be reused but they can't be skinned or themed. Technically they are both ...
